The Red Giant company has released a new version of the Magic Bullet Grinder transcoding software. This software converts the popular H264 formats of Canon DSLR cameras to formats more suitable for post-production: Apple Prores and photojpeg.
It allows to choose the whole Prores family (except proxie resolution), to work at 24p or 25p and to add timecode on screen for offline work.
With this software we gain two things with respect to using log&transfer in FCP for transcoded: we do not occupy the FCP doing the conversion so we can edit while this is done in background. And on the other hand the software is multi-core, it takes advantage of all the cores and processors of the machine in which we work to gain speed.
The price is right: $49, it’s worth it if we are going to do a lot of editing with this kind of cameras. The only thing I miss is the inclusion of the dnxhd to be able to do native editing in Avid, but what can you do, now Avid seems to be out of fashion…
Here you have the software data sheet.
