A few days ago, the new version of On-Set Dailies, from Colorfront, a Hungarian post-production house and software developer, was presented, introducing 4K real-time playback as its most notable new feature.
With this version(On-Set Dailies Winter 2012), in addition to being able to continue working as before with HD videos, it is now also possible to monitor and review 3K, 4K or 5K RAW material (although it supports higher formats, viewing can only be up to 4K).
One of the main functions of this work tool is to be able to review the dailies quickly on the same day (and even on the set itself) in which they have been recorded. Taking into account this novelty and integrating a 4K projector (such as those from Sony, Christie, Barco and Nec) a workflow is achieved, with a very high quality visualization, from the shooting that could only be obtained in advanced post-production processes.
In addition to playback, we can synchronize in different ways (some automatic in the style of FCP X and others manual), manipulate audio, perform color correction and manage metadata.
According to the announcement, delivery of the material (in common formats) and with the best “faster-than-real-time” quality in mind is possible. The 4K video output can be done via DVS Atomix DVI, Atomix HDMI and Red Rocket.
In today’s productions, new developments are being introduced to which post-production systems have to adjust. One of them is the arrival of new high-end cameras, which bring with them new formats. Colorfront have been foresighted and have added them in this version, so you can work with formats from:
– Sony F65RAW
– XDCAM EX
– RED Epic R3D
– Alexa Studio 4K Anamorphic
– Canon C300
– Panasonic P2
– GoPro
Another factor to take into account is that on certain films the material is being shot at “higher” frame-rates than usual. On-Set Dailies offers support for RAW, DPX and TIFF, with 2D or S3D projects being shot at 48/60 fps.
Additional features include improved rendering tools (background rendering and render queue management), support for multi-camera formats, waveform monitors and histogram analysis tool, as well as effects such as Vignette, Grading, Blur Mix, Tilt or Grain.
It is compatible with Windows and Mac OS X and can be driven by Tangent ( Element, Wave or CP200) and Euphonix Artist series controllers.
