The pricing scheme of Odyssey, the latest family of products launched by Convergent Design, has been unveiled. With a 7.7-inch, 1280×800 OLED display, these monitor-recorders come in two configurations: Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q.
Odyssey7
Originally, the company announced that all recording options would carry a surcharge over the base price. However, we now know that they have allowed both models (7 and 7Q) to have up to 60fps recording with the DNxHD codec at no additional cost.
In order to record with Odyssey, at least one Convergent Design SSD card is required (two slots are available):
- 240GB → $595
- 480GB → $1195
- 960GB → $2195
Odyssey7 is expected to start shipping in November for $1295. Here you have all the information about it.
Odyssey7Q
This is the one you will need if you want more flexibility in recording features, including support for four simultaneous video streams, quad-split monitoring capability and a much wider range of recording options than the Odyssey7 model.
Also included are 8 channels of embedded audio, unlike the two in Odyssey7, and image analysis options such as waveform and RGB parade during playback.
Users can unlock these options with a one-time payment or by using a rental mode that activates recording in a particular format, with a limited number of days. These are the possibilities:
– HD/2K High Frame Rate, RGB: recording in DNxHD YCC, 10-Bit and up to 120fps (up to 880Mbps, in .mov); or uncompressed recording in HD and 2K, RGB 444, at 10 or 12-Bit and up to 60fps.
It costs $1495 to purchase and $75 per day to rent.
It is the recommended option for cameras such as the Sony F3, F23 or F35.
– Quad HD/4K: uncompressed Quad HD or 4K recording, YCC, at 10-bit and up to 30fps (in .dpx).
The purchase price is $1495 and the rental is $75 per day.
It is the recommended option for the Sony F55 and other cameras that can output 4K through four HD-SDI outputs.
– FS700 RAW: HD and 2K raw recording, up to 240fps (in .dng); or uncompressed Quad HD and 4K YCC recording, up to 30fps (in .dpx).
The purchase price is $1495 and the rental is $75 per day.
This is the option for the Sony FS700 (HXR-IF5 interface module is not required).
– HD/2K Raw: HD and 2K raw recording at up to 120fps (in .dng).
The purchase price is $2495 and the rental is $125 per day.

Intended for Alexa Series cameras, except XT cameras.
– Quad-Stream HD: includes support for recording up to four separate video streams using the Avid DNxHD codec, up to 1080p30/1080i60 or 720p60 (up to 220Mbps in .mov).
