Panasonic has used the Photokina photography trade show (Cologne, Germany) to announce the LUMIX GH5 camera, which will offer 4K 60p/50p and 6K 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit.

The camera presented was only a prototype, so we cannot yet know each and every detail.

The new GH5 model will be capable of 6K at 30fps. However, it appears that this does not mean 6K video, but from this recording it is possible to get 18megapixel 6K still images. Some call this “hybrid photography,” where you start from high-resolution video to extract still images.

Another new feature is that 4K video can now be captured in 4:2:2 10-bit and the company is announcing that this would be the world’s first CSC (Compact System) camera with 4K 60p/50p and 4K 30p capabilities with these sampling conditions and color depth. It also features interchangeable lenses.

The launch is expected to take place in the first half of next year, i.e. between January and June 2017.
