Panasonic to release the Lumix GH5

Panasonic unveiled its new Lumix GH5 at CES in Las Vegas, which caused quite a stir when a prototype was shown last year at Photokina.

This is its new flagship product, a mirrorless, interchangeable-lens MFT (Micro Four Thirds) camera with the ability to capture video in 8-bit 4K up to 60p, or 10-bit 4:2:2 4K up to 30p. It uses dual recording on SD cards and MOV, MP4 and AVCHD formats. The frequency can be set to 59.94Hz, 50Hz or 24Hz.

Among the improvements added to its predecessor, the GH4, are a 25% increase in pixel count to 20.3 megapixels on a MOS-type sensor and a new image processing engine called Venus. The combination of several improvements in sensor readout speed and Venus processing enables UHD video recording.

We have two gamma possibilities, Cinelike D and Cinelike V, although it can also be set to 709 for HDTV production. In addition, we can record using the V-LogL color profile, but this requires a paid software upgrade.

Other highlights include:

  • Waveform and vectorscope monitors.
  • SMPTE time and bar code.
  • Selectable luminance levels.
  • Synchro-scan” mode to suppress flicker.

The new Lumix GH5 is expected to arrive at the end of March for a price of about $2,000. However, not all features will be available from the launch date, but updates will be released on a rolling basis. For example, in April there will be new firmware to enable Full HD 10-bit 4:2:2:2 recording; later there will be others for 4K (30p/25p/24p) in 10-bit 4:2:2:2 at 400Mbps, anamorphic recording, or HLG in Photo Style mode For 4K HDR video recording.
