There are many codec tables circulating on the internet, the most complete are perhaps the Creative Commons ones that we already announced some time ago. However, since these are perhaps too complete (and require a lot of screen resolution to be able to be seen) since some time ago I elaborate my own codec tables with the most common or used codecs (and some more that sneaks in).
I recently updated my codec table so I am passing you the latest version. The table includes standard definition, HD and digital cinema codecs, including RAW codecs (I think all of them). As you know many codec names actually include a whole family of “flavors” (like XDCAM HD, or Prores or DNXHD) so in the table are only the highest “flavors” of the range. In the same way the transfer rate column can be variable depending on the codec or the camera, since altering the “flavor”, the compression or the recording frame rate would change the data rate (this is the typical case of the Red Code). In addition certain codecs are standard, that is to say that several manufacturers use them (like Cinema DNG) creating each one their own version, in the table are some of those versions.
It is therefore not a unique information but I think it is very interesting and of reference in all this salad that we have had to live in the professional video (and thank goodness we are not talking about the webcast or webcasting).
And if you are still a bit lost with all this mess, in our codecs, formats and workflows course we explain these and many more things.
If you notice any error or you think I should include any other notify me without problems and we will make the changes, just comment on the post 🙂 I hope it will be of your interest!
