For those who work in video editing, this is one of the most awaited news, as Adobe will finally support ProRes RAW natively. Blackmagic has released a free plug-in for Adobe Premiere and Avid to work with its BRAW codec.
Even before the start of IBC 2019 Adobe released the news, although we had very little information. Now we can be sure that Adobe has natively included the ProRes RAW codec for Premiere editors to work with. This may mean for many a change in the workflow from now on. Recall that ProRes RAW is a high-performance, high-quality codec for RAW video use that allows greater control over image processing without doing so with the camera’s own raw format. You can work with the camera’s RAW data but in a faster and more flexible workflow, especially for MacOS systems.
We are still waiting for the Adobe software update to be able to work with the Apple and Atomos codec. In just over a year it has almost covered the entire market and you can work with it natively in practically all professional editing programs: Avid, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro X, Edius…
Avid has also embraced this ProRes RAW codec for inclusion in its Apple and Windows systems. To increase compatibility between systems, Apple has provided Avid with decoding systems for Avid’s native 64-bit DNxHD and DNxHR codecs.
Blackmagic, as previously announced, has released a free plug-in for Avid and Adobe Premiere editing systems that lets you work with the Blackmagic RAW codec and is now available. In these two editing systems the codec pulls CPU instead of GPU as it does in DaVinci Resolve. This is also great news for those who edit in Premiere or Avid and color grade in DaVinci because there will be no need for re-encoding and no loss of quality during the process.
