If we think of 8K, we should implicitly think that 4K post-production times, already long and tedious, will be doubled. If we also add that instead of 30fps we are talking about 60fps we will have to double our calculations again.
Quantel has been known throughout its history, among other things, for delivering high real-time performance at high resolutions. Twelve years ago it already showed a 2K system, and now we can see its Pablo Rio working at 8K and showing a monitor output with the same frame size.
This was made possible by AJA Corvid 88 multi-channel I/O cards, which enable the required 5GB/s continuous data throughput. Processing power is provided by three NVIDIA Tesla K80s and three RAID 60 arrays controlled by Quantel’s FrameMagic technology. Thanks to these qualities, the company offers the necessary performance for 160 minutes of stored 8K 60p material.
