RED announces MONSTRO 8K its new full frame 8K sensor

U.S.-based RED has announced its new full-frame 8K sensor, from its WEAPON line, named MONSTRO 8K.

This is set to be the successor to the DRAGON 8K VV sensor, which it has surpassed in terms of dynamic range, up to 2/3 steps; as well as image quality; greater detail in shadows, etc.

In the words of Jarred Land, president of RED: “RED’s in-house sensor program continues to push the boundaries of pixel design every day, and MONSTRO is the poster child for our relentless pursuit of the best image sensors. The Full Frame 8K MONSTRO provides a dynamic range never seen before, and impressive color predictability with support for our IPP2 line.”

Among its main features, this new sensor will capture 8K at a speed of 60fps, at 35.4 megapixels.

In addition, the combination of the company’s own cameras such as DSMC2, or the WEAPON, with MONSTRO, will allow simultaneous recording in REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes or AVID DNxHD/HR.

Regarding price, the MOSNTRO 8K VV will be available to users for a price of $79,000 starting in early 2018.
