RED’s new 8K cameras

This week RED Digital Cinema, the renowned developer of digital cinema cameras, began marketing its two latest models, RED Epic-W and Weapon 8K.

Both feature the compact and modular DSMC2 design, and incorporate the new Helium sensor. This sensor is the latest technology developed by RED, and achieves a higher resolution (8K) in Super 35, while maintaining the dynamic range of the Dragon sensor.

As just mentioned, this camera is capable of capturing 8K in Full Frame at up to 30fps, offering Super 35 lens coverage. Its data rate is 275 MB/s.

The price for the camera body is $29,500.

RED Weapon 8K S35

This is the latest model added to the Weapon line, and like its companion it captures 8K Full Frame images, but increases the frame rate to 60fps and the data rate to 300 MB/s.

It is priced at $49,500 for the camera body, the same as the Weapon 6K with the RED Dragon sensor.

RED has also announced that in the coming weeks it will be introducing image processing enhancements, including new color science. These enhancements will be available on all cameras with the Helium sensor and in post-production software for all footage shot with RED.
