Over the weekend Assimilate released the new generation of its Scratch and Scratch Lab v7 products. Version 7 has added new tools and support, and includes a number of features that will allow users to go faster and achieve smoother and more efficient workflows.
Undoubtedly, the company’s most important new feature is Scratch’s powerful new 3D compositing toolset, which integrates seamlessly with this color grading, data management and finishing system. Thanks to this quality, Scratch and Scratch Lab v7 offer an integrated user interface through the production of dailies and the “Creative DI” (color grading, compositing and finishing techniques).
Scratch
The seventh version of Scratch has brought with it these expanded compositing tools, which include a new 3D camera model, an improved environment for OFX (OpenFX) and also the plugin workflow has been revamped for better results. In this update it will be possible to obtain complete interactivity with different VFX plugins, among which we can find Sapphire, Neat Video, ReelSmart Motion Blur, Beauty Box and Mocha Pro.
Mocha Pro is a software from Imagineer Systems (which recently released version 3.1 with new lens distortion support and features) that is now fully integrated with Scratch thanks to new data support and processing, which allows importing Planar Tracking tracking data. In this way, users can match movements or stabilize images following a “Mocha Pro-to-Scratch” workflow.
In addition, it is now also possible in Scratch to “nest” multiple layers to apply color corrections or work with them as a group. New rendering features have also been added, such as directional and motion blur, multi-sampling and bit-map filtering. In this video you can see them and how they work with Mocha Pro:
As always with new releases, there is new native support: Phantom Miro, Canon C500, Canon C300, Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Arri’s latest Debayer algorithm, Sony F55 and F65 HFR (High Frame Rate), and Red’s 5K. In addition, full support for the ACES specification is included in Scracth v7, including file format, color space, and device and rendering transformations.
Finally, in Scratch the visualization model has been renewed, showing the content in a more intuitive way. Here is a demonstration:
Scratch Lab
Scratch Lab is a system known for its advanced work with dailies, managing media and metadata from most cameras on the market in a single timeline. It includes tools for audio synchronization, color correction and look creation in real time, and provides fast rendering with the ability to export simultaneously in multiple formats for review or editing (all on set).
Now with this release, a number of improvements have been made to media organization, metadata management and timecode. The tools for audio synchronization allow several ways to do this, even if the timecode is wrong or lost.
The price of Scratch 7 remains at $20,995 and Scratch Lab 7 at $5,990 (both include the first year of support and maintenance).
