Subscription-based entertainment and audiovisual content service Sky launches Sky Q. Sky Q is a box where you can access all content from different platforms in from a single device. What was expected for the end of the year has been brought forward and already supports HDR content.
For HDR broadcasting Sky has opted for the HLG curve, Hybrid Log Gamma, leaving aside the more standardized HDR10 or Dolby Vision. The fact of opting for this curve entails some limitations for users, since not all televisions have compatibility with this curve, although more and more brands are including it in their televisions.
On the other hand, users with a Sky Q box will have to see if their model supports HDR broadcasting, as not all models do, especially the older ones. A quick way to see if the box supports HDR content is to look at the hardware version and if it starts with 32B2xx or 32B1xx they are usually compatible.
At the moment Sky has added some content available in HDR and is expected to gradually include more in the coming months, including Netflix or Disney + and movies for Sky Cinema, without forgetting the future Olympic Games. What is already available since a few days ago is the recently launched Sky Nature channel with nature programming that includes 3 different programs and another nature special Pridelands: Wilderness Reborn. As for fiction series, its catalog includes the series Gangs of Lemur Island and Malawi: Wildlife Rescue.
We are increasingly seeing how HDR is being implemented in recording, post-production and broadcasting systems. In Spain is not available the Sky Q box to enjoy HDR content, at the moment it is only available in the UK, but we can enjoy HDR content on other platforms.
