Smoke 2013 Course

Following Apple’s discontinuation of its famous Final Cut Pro 7, a revolution is taking place in the field of professional video editing software. Autodesk’s bet is its new and renewed version of Smoke on Apple platform, Smoke 2013. After many months of open beta comes this program that aims to be one of the most popular in the coming years. Smoke 2013 is a tool that combines editing, advanced compositing and color correction up to 4K. With it, editors will not only be able to edit but also perform online and finishing processes, thus facilitating workflows.

This Smoke 2013 course will show the basis of the tool from scratch, allowing editors or compositors to learn step by step the philosophy of this renewed classic of Autodesk postproduction. During the course the different modules that make up Smoke 2013 will be explained, allowing the student at the end to have the necessary knowledge to start a professional project with it.

TEACHER: Alberto Juárez

Alberto Juárez is a visual effects compositor and operator of Autodesk Smoke and Flame. During the last years he has worked for the companies Infinia and IMASBLUE in the postproduction of advertising (for campaigns for clients such as Orange, Coca-Cola, Vodafone, Peugeot, Nivea, Mahou, or El Pais) of cinema for feature films (Blancanieves, Las Nornas, Santos, or Teresa, el Cuerpo de Cristo) and TV series such as Los Hombres de Paco, or Aída. AIMED AT: The course is designed so that both editors and compositors can quickly learn the basics of using Smoke 2013 in the post-production area.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Previous experience in any post-production discipline: editing, compositing, color grading, 3D, etc.

1-INTRODUCTION

• Introduction to Smoke 2013 and Autodesk compositing systems.
• Hardware configuration that can be used with Smoke 2013. Operating system, graphics cards, video cards, storage.
• Internal organization of the file system and database. How project folders are organized. Where data and media files are stored.

2-INTERFACE

• Media Panel: Libraries, folders, source clips, sequences, shared libraries, search.
• Viewing Panel: Thumbnail View, Player, Source-Sequence, Triptych Player.
• Editing panel, or Timeline.
• Tabs.
• Media Hub: Material import and export tasks
• Conform: Conformed from edl, xml, aaf.
• Tools: Tools and effects to generate new material.

3-CREATION OF PROJECTS

• User creation.

• System of work with nodes. Creating, organizing, selecting nodes, adding material or clips.
• Action: Composition system in 3D space.
• Color Correction: Color Corrector, Color Warper.
• Keyer: Master Keyer, Modular Keyer,…
• Masks: Gmask. Generate masks to isolate a part of the image by applying curves.
• Trackers and Image Stabilization. Analyze the movement of a shot to stabilize it or to adjust another image to that movement.

6-TEXT MODULE.
