Sony introduces a new 4K projector

Sony has recently introduced the VPL-VW500ES VPL-VW500ESa 4K model that joins the company’s Home Cinema series and has been designed to bring the high resolution of movie theaters to our homes.

Although based on the previous VPL-VW1000ES (the first 4K model on the market, introduced early last 2012), Sony has included improvements in its internal operation and some features that facilitate installation flexibility.

The VPL-VW500ES is about 18 cm shorter and includes a ventilation system located at the front, so there is no need to worry about the remaining space.

Using a motorized zoom lens (2.06) with a wide range of shift options (85% vertical and 35% horizontal), it eliminates the need for additional platforms in the installation. It also integrates an RF transmitter that synchronizes with the RF 3D glasses for wider coverage and better stability, without the need for cables.

This projector is capable of displaying 4K (4096×2160) images at 60fps (in a 4:2:0 YUV signal), due to the new HDMI 2.0 standard. It has a brightness of 1,700 lumens and high dynamic contrast of 200,000:1 to display highly defined images with great detail even in dark scenes.

The optical engine and SXRD panels incorporate Triluminous Display technology, which produces a much wider color gamut and reproduces tones and textures better than a standard projection system.

Automatic calibration functions are available, but it is also possible to use manual tools to adjust the brightness, hue and saturation (of each color) according to individual preferences.

In addition to native 4K material, Sony gives the option of using its Reality Creation technology to “upscale” images from a Full HD Blu-ray or DVD to 4K, even if they are 3D movies.

Other features include a function that memorizes the lens position to adjust it to an aspect ratio (such as 16:9 or Cinemascope) and saves the changes for future viewing; supports screens from 60 to 300 inches; and includes a USB port for firmware updates.

Here you can see all its specifications. And if you want to learn more about calibration and color management, don’t hesitate to take a look at the next course scheduled for December.
