SUP 9.1 update for ARRI Alexa

ARRI has released the new SUP 9.1 (Software Update Packet) update, which adds high-speed DNxHD 444 recording on the Alexa XT.

In the previous version, SUP 9.0, recording in this codec (Avid DNxHD 444, at 10-bit) was introduced for the entire Alexa line of cameras. Now, the change comes to make high-speed capture possible; however, only on the Alexa XT and with some conditions that depend on the recording medium:

  • XR capture discs: up to 96fps.
  • 120 GB CFast 2.0 cards: up to 90fps.
  • 64 GB SxS Pro cards: up to 60fps.
  • 32 GB SxS Pro cards: up to 30fps.

In addition, this update also contains several improvements and bug fixes. Playback stability, audio monitoring quality and ProRes encoding have been improved, DNxHD A/V synchronization has been optimized, and fixes have been made to clip metadata and timecode generation.

The SUP 9.1 software update is available free of charge to existing Alexa owners. All you need to do is log in to Arri’s website, download the file and move it to an SD card so it can be loaded on camera.

Not clear about the difference between DNxHD and ProRes, or between the different recording media mentioned? I recommend that you take a look at the Codecs, formats and workflows course.
