After Nab 2015 and the new features that it has brought I have updated the video codecs table that many of you may already know. I have removed some already obsolete ones (although I have resisted to remove the SD ones because they are still sometimes seen out there), I have updated the 4K ones including for example the XF 4K of the Canon C300 Mark II and I have differentiated the different elements of current codec families such as XAVC, ProRes or DNxHR.
All this in a new, easier to read format (don’t get your hopes up, the reading is easier but they are still hell on earth) with example cameras and recorders, external links to manufacturers’ sites and also to calculators such as Aja or KataData. Well, a little bit of a tinkerer…
You can download the table in the “Best of 709” section of the page where you will also find featured articles and downloads of video clips from various cameras and codecs (registration is required to enter the section, mostly because of viruses and bots).
And you already know that if you have doubts with all this fuss about codecs (normal) you can take our online course “Codecs, formats and workflows” and for three months watch the course videos and have support through private forum with the teacher (me, in this case 🙂
The table does not include ALL the codecs in the world, but only the ones I consider most useful. In the same way the structure corresponds to a workflow logic (capture, intermediation and mastering) but of course others could be included or organized in another way. Any suggestion you may have (or a simple “thank you” 🙂 will be welcome in the comments.
Ala, dive into the wonderful world of codecs!!!!
