The Foundry releases a free version of Mari

A few days ago The Foundry decided to release a free version of Mari, its VFX system for texturing and painting.

The company’s intention is that users can use Mari as a learning tool or for their personal projects, i.e. it is intended for non-commercial use.

For the same reason, certain functions have been limited:

• The maximum resolution for texture export is 4K at 16bits per channel.

• Possible export formats are PSD, PNG, TGA and JPG/JPEG (excluding TIF/TIFF, HDR, DDS and PTX).

• UV texture patches have been limited to 6 per object.

• Custom shading is not supported.

• Python and Session Scripts functions have been disabled.

• The software only allows working with a maximum of 5 objects at a time.

If you are not yet a Mari user but want to learn how to use it, you can combine this free license with the tutorials you will find on their website.

The free version of Mari can now be downloaded through this link for Mac, Windows and Linux. Please note that it does not carry any watermark but since it is for non-commercial use the projects are not compatible with the official version of Mari.
