The mysterious new RED rental camera

In what came as a surprise to everyone, RED has just released a photo of its latest camera and it looks like a very different beast from the company’s previous devices.

Currently we don’t know any technical information about RED’s latest cinema camera, other than that it will only be rented. Jarred Land had only the following to say about it,

“Not for sale, but you’re likely to see them popping up next month in a few places, so I thought you might like to have a sneak preview :).”

What we can say is that the RANGER looks very different from previous RED cameras. The body adopts a much more traditional film camera form factor and mitigates the industrial design themes of previous RED cameras. Large buttons and direct control dial functionality, along with a prominent ARRI-style rosette, are located near the front of the body.

The RANGER would appear to be a very mature looking film camera in the sense that it seems to adopt familiar design guidelines and ergonomics that will please those in a film environment. We eagerly await to see what the full technical specification is. Of course, the question that will be on many people’s minds is whether the company can be persuaded to make the camera or a similar one available for purchase rather than just rental.

And of course, at 709 media room, we will be very attentive to the news to communicate them quickly.
