Canon has just announced its two new lenses from the family RF FAMILY OF LENSES family lenses for full frame cameras, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM. With these two new models, it expands its offerings for the new RF mount mirrorless camera Canon EOS R. You could say that these new lenses are an equivalent to the 50mm and 70-200mm EF but with RF mount.
We start with the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. One of the classics of the Japanese brand, standing out for its brightness and standard angle of view. A versatile lens that brings us closer to human vision and is suitable for portraying people in a natural way. It has a minimum focusing distance of 30 centimeters, something different with respect to the EF model which was 35.
Although seemingly the same, Canon has incorporated changes to the legendary 50mm with an entirely new optical system based on six elements grouped in five groups. The diaphragm is composed of 7 blades that help create a smooth and beautiful bokeh. It is a precision molded optic with aspherical elements and a Super Spectra coating. The Super Spectra coating ensures harmonious color reproduction without any image blur or unwanted image artifacts.
It also improves the autofocus with the new STM motor that makes it more accurate and faster. The design of the manual focus ring has also changed, making it more intuitive.
The other lens announced by Canon is the RF 70-200 MM f/4 IS USM telephoto lens. Another flagship of the brand, now taken to RF mount. Here Canon, can boast of having the world’s shortest and lightest interchangeable lens with f/4 aperture among lenses of these focal lengths. A lens that offers high working performance and also very versatile with the added bonus of being lightweight.
In this case the lens design is structured with16 optical elements in 11 groups and UD Ultra-low Dispersion lenses. The diaphragm is composed of nine blades and the coating in this case is not Super Spectra but Air Sphere. Most remarkable of all is undoubtedly the f/4 brightness and the reduction in size compared to the EF equivalent.
It has a Dual Nano USM motor for autofocus and also has a five-stop optical stabilizer.
