Tutorial: Material Log C in Final Cut Pro X

When working with ProRes files from an ARRI Alexa camera, they are most often recorded using the Log C curve. This way we can preserve detail in both highlights and lowlights and have much more range for the color correction process (among other things).

In this two and a half minute tutorial it is quite clear (in a basic way) what Log C recording is, what it is for and how it works in editing.

If we have recorded in logarithmic, we usually generate what we call “dailies” for editing. In this case it is a matter of creating a new clip that keeps all the original metadata but with a 3D LUT applied to view the shot with normal saturation and contrast.

*In other situations dailies may also involve transcodes (from ARRIRAW to ProRes or DNxHD) or resolution changes (from 4K to Full HD).

Since Final Cut X version 10.0.8 there is the possibility to view the recorded material in Log C without having to go through the dailies, being able to view it in the Rec standard. 709.

Final Cut performs this “conversion” automatically, although if we want to edit the material in logarithmic we simply have to go to the Inspector > Info > Settings and deactivate the “Log Processing” option.

On April 5 will take place our next Final Cut Pro X course, where you can learn all these issues and the general handling of the tool. In this link I leave all the information about schedules, price and contents.
