Tutorial on chroma extraction in FCP X

Today I wanted to share with you this video tutorial about chroma key extraction in the Final Cut Pro X editing system, in which we talk especially about green chroma keys due to their standardization.

The demonstrators, Steve Martin and Mark Spencer, assure us that approximately 85% of the extraction can be performed by simply applying the corresponding effect in FCP X and using the rest of the settings to achieve a very good result. The example they show us is a rather complicated shot, partly because the green lighting is not homogeneous and partly because elements such as the hair are difficult to separate from the background.

In the available parameters, all the functions that currently exist in Motion have been added. In the 10-minute tutorial we will be explained little by little how to use them to improve the final result.

Among these options we have the different viewing modes, such as matte mode, where you will be able to understand perfectly how an alpha channel works and where transparency is applied. The “Sample Color” and “Edges” tools are also explained, so that you can fine-tune the extraction while preserving details at the edges.

Finally, you will learn how to make animations to set the parameters differently in several points of the same plane.

This and many more tools will be explained in the next Final Cut Pro X course, organized on February 1 and taught by José Carlos Panadero.
