Upcoming USB 4 news

The International Organization in charge of defining connectivity standards has announced the latest developments for the move to USB 4. This connectivity standard will add support for Display Port v2.0, connections with HDR monitors and 16K resolution. The advancement in technology forces the connections to also catch up so that no bottlenecks are generated and an adequate data flow is allowed.

USB4 will use USB Type-C to increase the connection capabilities between devices by adding the potential of Display Port Alt Mode v2.0. The new standard is based on the technology now known as Thunderbolt 3 so that more data can travel through this connection network.

The use of USB Type-C is due to the widespread standardization in devices such as laptops, cell phones and even monitors. The aim is to increase the bandwidth over which display, data and power paths travel. In addition to the 40 gbps offered by the thunderbolt 3 standard, the new Alt Mode 2.0 version of the display port is capable of increasing data transmission to 80 gbps to offer a single connector that allows HDR displays, 8K monitors, gaming, augmented reality, etc…

Until now to have a video input with high resolution and color depth was only possible through a Display Port 2.0 input so that the four-lane PHY layer structure was maintained. Now we can have this resolution and data refresh rate of 60 Hz on a USB system.

At the moment we will not see any products with USB4 and Display Port Alt Mode 2.0 until the end of the year.
