Canon has announced its new EOS Cinema line camera, the Canon EOS C70. Canon EOS C70. With it they bring the world of cinema even closer to a lighter and more compact design like that of the mirrorless but with features typical of cinema cameras. New in this line of Canon design is the incorporation of the RF mount in a mirrorless camera, the first to have it.
The RF mount is a large size mount with a 12-pin communication system that allows for greater focusing precision, smooth aperture control, larger focusing area and image stabilization. The short rear focus allows lenses to be matched to the focal plane of the sensor and achieves a more than halving of the recording distance compared to other SLRs(20mm).
It features a Super 35 CMOS sensor with low noise and dual gain output. Canon calls this dual gain system DGO, Dual Gain Output and with which 16 steps of dynamic range can be achieved. The dual-level recording readout works based on highlights and shadows, with one readout for highlights and saturation and another for shadows and noise, the same system we saw for the first time on the Canon C300 Mk III. All this added to the powerful DIGIC DV7 image processor, results in high quality images even in low light conditions.
In terms of recording formats, the Canon EOS C70 allows high frame rate recording at up to 120 fps in 4K. Full HD in Super 16 can be recorded at up to 180 fps. Files can be 4K XF-AVC/MP4 for 10-bit recordings with 4:2:2 ALL-I or Long GOP sampling and in H.265 or H.264 at 8 bits. With 2 card slots, it allows simultaneous recording in different formats.
The next-generation EOS Cinema system camera will hit the market in November with a price tag of around €4,700.
