FilmLight active v5 Baselight STUDENT

Baselight STUDENT, FilmLight’s free macOS application, has been enhanced with the innovative and creative advances of Core Baselight v5 software. Baselight STUDENT v5 will allow those developing their skills as colorists to have the full range of creative features, based on the same platform as all Baselight systems.

Central to this is Base Grade, which brings a new and innovative approach to color manipulation, mimicking the way the human eye works. Along with Base Grade, users can combine other new v5 grading tools such as Boost operators, as well as beauty tools such as Texture Equalizer, Paint and Grid Warp. Baselight STUDENT v5 also includes FLUX Manage, a powerful new media management system introduced with Baselight version 5.

Baselight STUDENT is an affordable way for colorists to learn Baselight, either to move into grading or to transition from other grading solutions. It is a full-featured, software-only version of the industry-leading Baselight system, running on Mac hardware that supports GPU processing.

It is designed as a platform for skills development rather than commercial work, so results are restricted to H.264 film and JPEG still images only. To get the look and feel of the user, the software can be controlled by FilmLight’s Slate control surface. Since its launch in 2017, thousands of users have downloaded the Baselight learning tool.

Initially available as a 90-day license for individuals who sign up as part of the Baselight Apprenticeship Program, colorists can request a license review to extend the duration of use, for example, to begin a career as a professional colorist’s assistant. For the duration of the license, FilmLight’s training team is available to answer any questions from users to ensure they get the most out of the application.

Users also have access to a variety of support materials, including Baselight manuals, a media training package and training videos. Customized training from in-house experts is also offered in the London, Los Angeles, Munich and Sydney offices to help ensure professional internships when students enter the job market as color assistants and colorists.
