New 46x 4K broadcast lens from Fujinon

Fujinon has unveiled during NAB Show 2018 its latest products, including a 4K broadcast glass part.

Full-frame sensors are becoming much more ubiquitous, and those who have invested in lenses designed to cover an APS-C or S35 sensor area run the risk of running into glass that simply doesn’t work very well with the larger sensors. Fujinon has therefore realized the need to make S35 lenses work on the larger sensors. The company’s new adapter accomplishes this by optically enlarging the projected area of the lenses in the larger sensor area.

So far it works with PL lenses like the Cabrio line, and yes, we ran into some drawbacks along the way. The main one is a loss of 1 point of light transmission. However, faced with the choice between buying an adapter and buying a new 40 ooo euro lens, it’s clearly worth just using your existing glass, unless your lens is a short DOF. Fujinon has not yet established a price, but it is estimated at around $5000-$6000.

Finally, Fujinon has shown its 46x 2/3 ” portable broadcast lens with 4K capabilities, which is part of its UA line. It is aimed at applications such as helicopters or other areas where a large zoom range is essential.
