Lacie has introduced its new Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2designed to facilitate portable storage with 4K workflows.
Through 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports, internal storage containing 2 PCIe Gen 2 SSDs of 500 GB each is accessed. Up to six Thunderbolt 2 devices can be daisy-chained and RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD modes can be enabled.
Average transfer speeds are 1,375 MB/s for read and 1,180 MB/s for write. These rates were achieved using the AJA System Test connected to a 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2.0Ghz Quad Core and 8GB of RAM. Speed will depend on the RAID mode used and average rates may vary from computer to computer.
It is built on an all-aluminum design, with internal heat dissipation and quiet cooling thanks to the thermally regulated fan.
This disk is presented as a new possibility for DITs, which, for example, could store 120 minutes of R3D material in 4K (150 MB/s) on each disk.
Right now the only existing model is the 1 TB (500 GB x 2), and it will be available during the first quarter of 2014.
