New firmware for the Sony F5 and F55

Sony has released firmware version 1.13 for its F5 and F55 cameras. In addition to some bug fixes, this update comes with much demanded features such as adjustable exposure rate during Raw recording and remote trigger.

Previously, when recording (Raw to AXS-R5 recorder) with Cine-EI (Exposure Index) mode, there was a limitation to monitor and record on SxS cards at the native camera EI value. With the recent update it is possible to raise or lower the exposure to the following values:

  • Sony F55: 400EI, 640EI, 800EI and 1250EI.
  • Sony F5: 640EI, 800EI, 1250EI and 2500EI.

Although it is generally not recommended to deviate from the camera’s native sensitivity exposure, this new feature provides a quick way to control changes that can be made in post-production.

In this version, the VF, SDI outputs and recording on SxS cards are modified simultaneously. However, an update is planned for December that will offer the option of not affecting SxS recording.

The upgrade also brings remote triggering for start and stop via the DC output connectors on the battery adapter or the AXS-R5.

This time the recorder does not require an update, but will work correctly with v1.12.

The noise reduction process has been optimized to improve image quality, although it is automatically disabled when recording in Raw.

Finally, some software improvements have been made:

  • During XAVC HD S&Q mode, from 51 to 59fps, a “drop frame” appeared from time to time.
  • In Cine-EI mode there were times when the statuses were not updated.
  • In some frequencies of the system, non-standardized LTC values were sometimes displayed.

From this page you can download the firmware update v1.13. And if you are interested in the F5 and F55 cameras, we will have them at the DIT Course scheduled between July 8 and 19.
