DropSync software tutorial

DropSync is a very simple software that allows you to keep folders from different computers or hard drives in sync.

For certain quick jobs you may not need a formal backup and archiving system, but simply want to keep your material on two duplicate hard drives, which are in sync during the project.

DropSync, a very simple program that synchronizes quickly due to the use of rsync, which transfers only the parts of the files that have changed, has been created precisely for this purpose.

If you want to follow this tutorial while testing with your own hard drives you can download the trial version from here.

DropSync_Setup

The first thing that appears when installing DropSync is this window. This is where we will choose a name for the first disk and the method by which the software will work, either through the Finder or remotely.

If we choose the first option, it will be because what we want to synchronize are hard disks, USB devices, shared volumes, etc. If we choose the second one, remotely, we will be connecting computers in a network, for which SSH is required.

This is the application interface. As you can see there are two external hard disks mounted: Drive 1 and Drive 2. In this case, the disk selected as root is the one on the left, Drive 1, although it could also be the other way around.

In your case one of the two windows will appear empty, because you have not yet selected the two disks. To set the second one, go to the Synced Places menu > Configure.

In the image above a new file has been added to Drive 1, named “Michael-headshot_WET-50×50”.

New files are unchecked. You have to check their box (located on the right) to indicate that you want them to be copied to the other hard disk.

To start the synchronization we go to the Run menu > Sync to Right (due to the position of the hard disks).

DropSync_Sync

The keyboard shortcut to perform this function is: Option + Command + Right Arrow.

Another option is to schedule the synchronization every so often or whenever there is a change in our disks.

That’s it! As I said, it is really simple.

DropSync can be purchased here for 7,75€. It is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.
