ProRes recording for the Phantom Flex4K

Until now, users of the Phantom Flex4K camera were limited to recording raw files only, which meant a large amount of storage capacity, even more so considering the 4K resolution. However, this will no longer be a problem for those who need to downsize their clips a bit.

A few days ago Vision Research, the developer of these super-slow-mo cameras, released an update that allows audio recording and the use of the ProRes 422 HQ codec. The company says that these files weigh approximately 2.5 times less than their Cine Raw equivalent, although of course you have to keep in mind that you no longer have the 12-bit and raw capabilities.

ProRes 422 HQ can be recorded at full camera resolution (4096 x 2304) and up to 938fps. It is also possible to use the “run/stop” mode to record longer takes with synchronized sound at up to 30fps.

Audio recording is achieved via a stereo AES/EBU signal going into the camera. It is recorded as a 24-bit, 48KHz wav file and is intended to be used as a reference track.

Phantom PCC software

The Phantom PCC software has also been revamped, and in fact needs to be upgraded in order to record audio and ProRes.

It is now possible to preview and download files via Ethernet, supports ACES color space using OpenEXR files and comes with new controls in the interface, such as for synchronizing camera groups or previewing an image using the timeline sweep.
