Today, creating a DCP might seem like a relatively accessible process: various applications allow generating a valid package in a few steps, reproducible without issues in numerous environments. However, professional cinematic distribution demands going far beyond a simple export. The coexistence of standards, the new requirements of SMPTE Bv2.1, advanced audio and subtitle management, digital signatures, encryption, or proper package validation determine whether a DCP is truly ready to integrate into the workflows of a distributor, a lab, or a commercial exhibition network.

In our Advanced Online DCP Creation Course, you will delve into the architecture and standards currently governing digital cinematic distribution. We will start from fundamental knowledge of a DCP’s internal structure to analyze the evolution from Interop and SMPTE A to SMPTE Bv2.1 (RDD52), understanding the differences between them, when each profile should be used, and their implications for cinema servers and automation systems.

Throughout the course, we will address some of the elements that separate a basic DCP from professional mastering: the use of Composition Markers for projection automation, mapping up to 16 audio channels using MCA Subdescriptors, advanced management of subtitles, Open Captions, and Closed Captions, and the certificates and digital signatures infrastructure necessary to guarantee the authenticity and integrity of packages intended for commercial distribution.

Finally, we will apply all these concepts to real mastering environments. We will work with EasyDCP, analyze the possibilities and limitations of DCP-o-matic, and build a complete DCP in Colorfront Transkoder under SMPTE Bv2.1 specification, incorporating subtitles, composition markers, advanced audio metadata, and electronic signatures. We will complete the workflow with DCP encryption, KDM generation, and technical package validation, thus covering the creation and delivery process used in professional cinematic distribution environments.

This course does not cover the basics of DCPs. We recommend taking our Online 4K DCP Creation Course first to get the most out of this advanced training.

Objectives

  1. Understand the differences between Interop, SMPTE A, and SMPTE Bv2.1 standards and select the most appropriate one based on the DCP’s destination.
  2. Interpret the internal structure of a DCP and its main control files, including CPL, PKL, Asset Map, and verification hashes.
  3. Correctly configure Composition Markers for cinema automation and professional exhibition workflows.
  4. Manage advanced multichannel audio and work with MCA Subdescriptors within SMPTE packages.
  5. Correctly prepare subtitles, Open Captions, and Closed Captions, considering their technical and operational differences.
  6. Understand the operation of digital certificates, electronic signatures, and PKI trust chains used in cinematic distribution.
  7. Create and analyze DCPs using tools such as EasyDCP, DCP-o-matic, and Colorfront Transkoder.
  8. Generate a professional DCP compliant with SMPTE Bv2.1 (RDD52), incorporating metadata, subtitles, advanced audio, and signatures.
  9. Perform encryption and KDM generation processes for destination cinemas.
